Early Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (February, 1996)
Average review score:

A good, small book.I recommend this edition of Pound's early poetry. It is very cheap and has a number of gems, including Pound's rendering from the Old English of The Seafarer, as well as a few Italian songs and Sestina: Altaforte, one of my favorites. Pound was acquainted with the musical heights of Greek and Italian lyric and did the best he could to transmit that into English, with varying success. Also see his ABC of Reading.

Excellent Introduction to YeatsAs a student, who is hard on cash, I found that this collection of poems by the great Irish author and poet W.B. Yeats was definitely an excellent collection to buy and read. This collection encompasses all of the collections written by the young poet during his early period. Particularly notable are "The Shepherd to His Beloved", "The Lake Isle of Innisfree" and other poems that have become immortal over the years. There are also poems that deal with Irish myths and legends and several poems written as dialogues or plays. This is an excellent collection that will introduce you to the worldd of Yeats if you haven't yet been introduced and further your understanding of this Irish genius.

Best "non diet" diet book writtenDr. Shintani gives a very detailed account of how diet effects our bodies. He discusses the benefits of eating the right foods and how they relate to our over all health. This book outlines what foods benefit and what foods hurt our health. Dr. Shintani backs up his statements with medical facts. I enjoyed the book and hope to be able to follow Dr. Shintani's guidelines.

Egypt and the Holy Land in Historic Photographs: Seventy-Seven Views (Dover Photography Collections)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (May, 1985)
Average review score:

Photographs of a lost worldIf the Egypt and holy land of the 19th century explorers interest you - or if you love David Roberts prints of Egypt and want to see what the temples look like from an objective view, then this book is for you. The photos presented here were taken by Francis Firth a Derbyshire photographer who travelled to Egypt and the middle east a number of times in the 1850's and 60's and recorded what he saw with these fantastic photographs.
The photos are all clear, beautiful shots, like the best of 19th century photography. You get to see views like The Pyramids of Giza and Dahshur, the temples of Dendera, Karnak, Luxor, Thebes and Edfu all buried in sand or in their "original" ruined 19th century state. In addition to the wonderful parade of Egyptian photos there are also scenes from Jerusalem, Gaza, the dead sea and Baalbek in Lebanon.
This is a wonderful book that takes you on a visual trip to the past. Recommended for anyone interested in Egypt or 19th century photography.

Elements of Point Set Topology (Dover Books on Advanced Mathematics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (September, 1991)
Average review score:

An unusual, and unusually good, book on topologyMost books on topology start with topology on the Rn and then introduce the finer points of topology. Baum's book starts right out with abstract point-set topology without skipping a beat. I learned general topology from this book and I'd absolutely recommend this to any student and instructor, along with Counterexamples In Topology by Steen and Seebach.

Essay on Man and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1994)
Average review score:

Crown jewels in Pope's diademPope's defining masterworks, "Essay on Man" and "The Rape of the Lock", are crystalizations of the 18th Century's defining impulses. The "Essay on Man" proselytizes on behalf of the deistic belief in an ordered, rational universe where humankind is no divine favorite but can understand its place on the Great Chain of Being and find happiness through knowledge and acceptance. Most will join with Voltaire in his hearty rejection of the doctrine "Whatever is, is right," yet it is impossible to deny the ennobling quality of Pope's optimism:
"Grasp the whole worlds of reason, life, and sense,
In one close system of benevolence:
Happier as kinder, in whate'er degree,
And height of bliss but height of charity."
Where "Essay on Man" expresses the rational principles of the Enlightenment, "The Rape of the Lock" exemplifies the love of the frivolous, the fashionable, and the feminine which gave such light and warmth to an era famed for its elevation of the intellect. The poem exemplifies the Rococo, that most playful of styles in literature; nowhere else in English lit does so much of the spirit of Boucher come through. Pope's verse swirls and sparkles in melodic luxuriance, his creamy couplets smooth and shapely as a woman's legs.
This compact edition also includes the "Elegy to the Memory of an Unfortunate Lady", one of the most beautifully severe (and overlooked) poems in the language-- a rare triumph of Neo-Classical lyric. Here also are the famous "Essay on Criticism", the galloping satire of the "Epistle to Dr. Arbuthnot", Epistle IV of the "Moral Essays", the "Ode on Solitude" and "The Dying Christian to His Soul", and the famed little epigram from a dog's collar-- all magnificent, all of them compact and gracious in expression, articulate and penetrating in thought. The serious devotee of Pope will want to go on to the treasures (and scholarly annotations) of the Twickenham edition, but this is a terrific anthology of some indispensable works from this controversial and indispensable genius.

The Fables of Aesop (Dover Juvenile Classics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 2002)
Average review score:

A beautiful rendition of classic tales. When it comes to childrens' books, sometimes the illustration is as important as the text. The illustrations in this book are derived from hand-stitched textile pieces - colorful and imaginitive. Sketches for the textile works are printed on the endpapers. Each page has one of Aesop's fables told briefly enough for a small child to digest, and in simple language that is easy to read out loud. There are many versions of Aesop, of course. I was looking for one that would make these old moral tales palatable for kindergarten and first graders, and this is the one.
